The Traditional design style often gets a bad rap. Some say it’s stuffy or “old fashioned” but  nothing could be further from the truth. Traditional style is really about balance, symmetry and comfort. By incorporating the essential elements of Traditional design, you can create a Traditional living room space that’s warm and inviting yet,  refined and elegant.

 Elements of Traditional Design

Symmetry and Coordination

Traditional style is all about balance and consistency. Matching furniture is often arranged in pairs in the center of the room to create and intimate conversation area. Matching artwork lighting, and accessories will be selected to create a semi-formal feel.

Soft Edges and Curves

No sharp edges here. Well crafted furniture has graceful lines and curves. Overstuffed, sumptuous sofas and accent pillows create a cozy, comfortable feel.

Subtle, Warm Colors

A traditional color palette usually consists of mellow, soothing neutrals like creams, taupes, and tans. However, bolder colors like burgundies, oranges and sage greens can be used for dramatic effect.

Rich Wood Tones

Darker woods like walnut, cherry, mahogany and oak are a essential part of Traditional style. Can be incorporated into furniture, wainscoting, banisters, ceiling beams and flooring all create a warm feel.

Luxe Fabrics

In a Traditional style room, pillows and throws made of luxurious fabrics like silk, velvet and even cashmere should be used to add a touch of elegance. Use of  floral, damask, and paisley patterns add visual interest to the subtle Traditional room.

Timeless, classic accessories

Traditional spaces are accessorized with carefully edited collections of artwork, 18th and 19th century inspired vases, bowls, and even busts and statues.  These items are usually displayed in pairs to create balance and symmetry.
